Libraries have changed dramatically in the last 20 years, and so has Pierce County. The Pierce County Library System is asking residents in the communities it serves to imagine the next two decades as part of a planning effort to better serve library users and potential users.
What: As part of the Pierce County Library 2030 planning effort, the system will host a series of open houses to solicit ideas from residents on what they want in library services and facilities.

When and where: The drop-in events will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the county’s library branches.

• Today: Buckley, 123 S. River Ave.; Orting, 202 Washington Ave. S.

• Wednesday: Eatonville, 205 Center St. W.

• Thursday: Lakewood, 6300 Wildaire Road S.W.; Parkland/Spanaway, 13718 Pacific Ave. S.

• Feb. 3: DuPont, 1540 Wilmington Drive.

• Feb. 4: Bonney Lake, 18501 90th St. E.; Graham, 9202 224th St. E.; South Hill, 15420 Meridian E.; Peninsula, 4424 Point Fosdick Drive N.W., Gig Harbor.

• Feb. 5: Key Center, 8905 KPN; Spanaway/Frederickson (potential location), Pioneer Valley Elementary School, 7315 Eustis Hunt Road.; Sumner, 1116 Fryar Ave.

• Feb. 10: Milton, 1000 Laurel St.; Steilacoom, 2950 Steilacoom Blvd.; Tillicum, 14916 Washington Ave. S.W.

• Feb. 11: Summit, 5107 112th St. E.

What’s next: Already, the library system has surveyed about 4,000 users and is talking with 100 community leaders, said spokeswoman Mary Getchell. The input will shape a proposed plan, which will go out again for public review. This fall, a proposal will go to the systems board of trustees, which would decide how to proceed. The proposal could shape a tax bond ballot measure to improve or expand libraries, Getchell said.

About the system: It serves 522,000 residents throughout Pierce County, outside of Tacoma and Puyallup, with 17 branch locations.
