Mount Rainier’s summer speaker series The 2007 Summer Speaker Series begins tonight at Mount Rainier National Park with a discussion of climate change in the Northwest.
Jeremy Littell, a research scientist for the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group will give a presentation on “Climate Change and the Glaciers, Forests and Rivers of the Pacific Northwest.” The program will be held at the Cougar Rock Campground amphitheater at 9 p.m.
The series focuses on some of the key environmental issues facing the park.
The rest of the schedule is:
July 12: “Volunteering to Rebuild Rainier,” by Kevin Bacher, Mount Rainier National Park volunteer coordinator, and Jill Baum, Student Conservation Association Rainier project manager; Cougar Rock, 9 p.m.
July 19: “Rising Riverbeds and the Future of Mount Rainier,” by Paul Kennard, National Park Service geomorphologist, and Scott Beeson, Mount Rainier National Park interpretive ranger and geologist; Cougar Rock, 9 p.m.
July 26: “Invaders of the Forests,” by Todd Smith of Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation Department; Ohanapecosh Campground amphitheater, 9 p.m.
Aug. 2: “Photographing Rainier,” by Chris and Connie Jacobsen, photographers and national park volunteers, Cougar Rock, 8:30 p.m.
Aug. 9: “Rainier Volcano – Yesterday Today & Tomorrow,” by Carolyn Driedger, U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist and outreach coordinator, Cougar Rock, 8:30 p.m.
Aug. 16: “Mountain Goat Ecology and Science,” by Jim Schaberl, wildlife ecologist, Mount Rainier National Park; Ohanapecosh, 8:30 p.m.
Aug. 17: “Climate Change and the Glaciers, Forests and Rivers of the Pacific Northwest,” by Lara Whitely Binder, outreach specialist for the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group; Cougar Rock, 8:30 p.m.
Aug. 22-23: “Torrents of Change: The November 2006 Flood at Mount Rainier,” by Mimi Gorman, interpretive ranger, Mount Rainier National Park; 8:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Cougar Rock and Aug. 23 at Ohanapecosh.
