Qwest is giving away free corded phones for people whose portable phones don’t work without power or who have cell phones they can’t recharge.
Qwest is offering the phones so people can call for help in an emergency, spokeswoman Shasha Richardson said.
If you have a phone jack and subscribe to a traditional provider, you can plug in a corded phone and make calls, Richardson said. The phones won’t work if you have Internet or cable-based service.
You don’t have to be a Qwest customer to get one.
The free phones are available at Qwest outlets in the Tacoma Mall, The Commons in Federal Way, the SuperMall in Auburn, Southcenter Mall in Tukwila and Westfield Mall in Olympia.
Richardson said all but a few Qwest customers had phone service Friday. A Verizon spokeswoman said its cell phone network had “a couple of sites” that went down earlier in the day, “but everything’s working just fine for us now.”
