The annual celebration of Mount Rainier and climbing is Saturday and Sunday at Rainier Mountaineering Inc. in Ashford.
Rainier Mountain Festival offers opportunities to meet mountaineering legends, learn more about gear, try the climbing wall and participate in the Alpine Games.

The event is free and starts at 9 a.m. each day.

Some of the activities you’ll find at the event:

Meet the legends: Among the 18 Mount Everest summitters in attendance will be Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Everest, and Ed Viesturs, the first American to climb the world’s 14 8,000-meter peaks. Many of the climbers will be signing their books.

Run the trails: Register at rainierfestival.com to run Sunday morning’s five-mile trail run. Walkers are welcome.

Alpine Games: Compete in speed climbing, sled pull and tent erecting for a chance to win cash prizes.

Mountaineering demos: Mountain guides will teach techniques and help you pick the right gear.

Watch a film: Top mountaineers will show slide shows and video from their expeditions.

Save a buck: Whittaker Mountaineering has its annual closeout sale, which includes the chance to buy gear from its 2007 rental inventory.

Kids games: An inflatable “bounce house” and free use of the rock wall will be available for children.

Information: Visit rainier festival.com.

My daughter and I decided to head to the other side of Rainier to meet some climbing royalty. Jim and Lou Whittaker were absolutely delightful. Finally had some additional autographs on my old Peace Climb sweatshirt, to join Robert Link's. Ed Viesturs (one of only 6 people in the world to have climbed all 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen) is more quiet and thoughtful. Just got done reading his book (autographed, yeah!) "No Shortcuts to the top". Great addition to my climbing books library. Also met Dave Hahn, very cool. All in all, a very worthwhile trip, even if we did take the loooooooong way home, through Paradise, Stevens Canyon, White Pass and Chinook. Was hard to drive by the closed gate on Cayuse Pass. Oh well, what's another couple of hours.;)
