Hikers and bicyclists can add the Carbon River Road to their list of options this weekend.
Heavy-equipment work that was scheduled to keep the road in Mount Rainier National Park closed until Sunday finished ahead of schedule, park officials reported Friday. The road will reopen at 8 a.m. today for hiking and bicycling.
The road had been closed to all traffic since November 2006, when major flooding caused extensive damage.
The closure enabled park crews to install several flood-protection structures within the damaged roadbed to prevent more damage when rains return in the fall and winter.
The road remains closed to motorized traffic.
The park is considering a range of alternatives for the future of the Carbon River corridor and will seek public input through an environmental assessment in 2008.
