If it’s raining here in town, is it snowing on the mountain?
Yes, for about the last week.

On Saturday, volunteers working at Paradise had to deal with falling snow. A favorite way to check conditions near Paradise is to check the webcam at www2.nature.nps.gov/air/webcams/parks/moracam/moracam.cfm

From the linked page above:

Park volunteer Flash Parlini reported walking through ankle-deep snow in the Tolmie Peak area of the park.

And Sunrise already has 7 inches of snow on the ground, according to data from the weather station there.

Having seen so much exposed rock on the mountain this summer, it’s nice to see the new snow.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Visitor centers at the park will begin changing their hours to the winter schedule.

At Longmire, the museum will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from Tuesday through Dec. 31.

The Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends and on Nov. 22-25 and Dec. 24-28 for the holidays. The restaurant will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday. Then it will be open 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. weekends and Nov. 22-25 and Dec. 24-28.

The visitor center at Ohanapecosh closes on Monday.

Finally, the Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh campgrounds will close on Monday.

FLOOD UPDATE

One of the easiest ways to update the status of the park as it recovers from the November 2006 flood is to check the online map. Go to www.nps.gov/mora, and click on the “Flood of 2006” link.

The map shows where bridges are out, where trails are damaged and other information. It was last updated on Sept. 27.
