While the calendar says its fall, conditions at Mount Rainier National Park are more like winter. Here is an update on operations at the park.
PARADISE
Work at the new visitor center is progressing. Crews were able to get the roof covered and the water barrier in place. However, snow late last week slowed progress.
Because of the work on the center and Paradise Inn, parking is limited. From now until Thanksgiving, parking is limited to the Jackson Visitor Center parking lot. No parking will be available at Upper Paradise near the inn.
The visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturdays and Sundays. Around Thanksgiving, it will be open Nov. 23-26, and during the Christmas holidays from Dec. 22-Jan. 1. The grill and gift shop are open 11 a.m.-4:45 p.m. when the visitor center is open.
LONGMIRE
The National Park Inn and General Store are open year-round and offer meals, lodging, gifts, firewood, ski rentals and ski instruction.
The Longmire Museum is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, offering visitor information, exhibits, book sales and climbing permits.
SUNRISE
The Sunrise area is closed for the winter season. Hikers and bicyclists can still use the road, but no restrooms or other public facilities are available.
WHITE RIVER
All public facilities in the White River area are closed for the season. Access to the campground area is determined on a daily basis, weather permitting. As of Nov. 1 or the first significant snowfall, the road will be gated for winter closure at the junction with Highway 410. Hikers and bicyclists can access the road, but no restrooms or public facilities are available.
OHANAPECOSH
All public facilities in the Ohanapecosh area are closed for the season.
ROADS
Nisqually Entrance to Longmire: Open year-round.
Longmire to Paradise: Open year round. From Nov. 1 through mid-May, the road will close nightly at Longmire. It will reopen in the morning once the road is cleared of snow and road conditions are safe.
Paradise Valley Road: Closed for the winter.
Sunrise Road: Closed for the winter.
White River Road to campground: Open as weather permits until winter closure in November or first significant snowfall.
Westside Road: Only the first three miles to Dry Creek can be driven because of heavy flood damage. Road might close at any time due to flooding or weather conditions. Road will close Nov. 1 or at first significant snowfall.
Stevens Canyon Road: Closed for the winter.
Carbon River Road: Closed to vehicular traffic due to flood damage.
Mowich Lake Road: Closed for the winter.
Highway 123 (south park boundary to Cayuse Pass): Winter closure will be early December or first significant snowfall.
Highway 410 and Chinook Pass: Closes in late November or after first significant snowfall.
CAMPGROUNDS
Ipsut Creek Campground: Open year-round. There is no potable water at the campground. Because the Carbon River Road between the entrance and the campground was damaged by flooding, campers must bike or hike in.
Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh are closed for the season. Sunshine Point Campground is closed indefinitely due to flood damage.
