Metro Parks is offering a number of winter adventure classes for adults, teens and families at all ability and experience levels. Assuming enough snow has fallen in time, here are descriptions of some of the programs scheduled.
FAMILY ADVENTURES
Wonderland Trail snowshoe hike: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Dec. 16. Snowshoe through some of the oldest forests left in Washington’s Cascades while enjoying views of the Nisqually River. An easy walk on a flat trail is perfect for snowshoers at all skill levels. Transportation, park admission and equipment are provided. Bring a lunch. For ages 7 and older. Cost: $25 Tacoma residents, $30 nonresidents.
TEEN ADVENTURES
Sledding at Mount Rainier: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Dec. 21. Teens and tweens can get out of the house and into the mountains during their holiday breaks. Transportation and equipment are provided. Bring a lunch. For ages 11 to 14. Cost: $35 Tacoma residents, $40 nonresidents.
Skiing/snowboarding at Crystal Mountain: 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Dec. 28. Teens out of school for the holidays can spend a day in the snow with the Metro Parks Outdoor Adventures staff. Transportation is provided. Lift tickets and equipment rental are available for an extra fee of $16 each. If lessons are needed, call for additional information. For ages 11 to 16. Cost: $45 Tacoma residents, $50 nonresidents.
WOMEN’S ADVENTURES
Snowshoeing & Winter Preparedness Clinic: 6:30-8 p.m. Dec. 5, Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 S. Tyler St., Tacoma. The clinic will focus on how to travel safely during any outdoor activity. Learn to dress appropriately for the snow, what gear to bring and what first aid is needed. For ages 18 and older. Cost: Free.
Snowshoe trip: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 15. Enjoy an outdoor adventure snowshoeing with experienced guides. Transportation and equipment are provided. No experience is necessary. Bring a lunch. For ages 21 and older. Cost: $55 Tacoma residents, $60 nonresidents.
