The Washington Department of Transportation says two Cascade Mountain passes, Chinook and Cayuse, have been temporarily closed because fresh snow has increased the possibility of avalanches.
The passes were closed Tuesday evening.
Transportation Department officials say 10 inches of new snow, on top of the existing 18-inch base, prompted avalanche forecasters to say the risk was too great to allow traffic. More snow is expected today.
When there is a break between storms, Transportation and Mount Rainier National Park staff will evaluate the snowpack and decide whether to reopen the passes or consider them closed for the winter season.
