The Greenwater Council Elections.
It was a really memorable council meeting! It was my 3rd meeting. There were about 20 people in attendance. Closer to 30 if you included kids. One member said he’d never seen so many people at a council meeting. We first talked about old business – the parade and tree lighting event was a great success! Originally one tree was going to be lit, but the idea caught on with the shop keepers and there were 4 that were lit at the same time! I heard estimates of up to 100s of people participating on both sides of 410. After that the Tavern was packed to standing room only and very festive! The parade was pretty and impressive, too. There were a number of vehicles, including one of our Fire trucks, with lights flashing, several colorfully lit vehicles, and 1 or 2 trucks pulling long hay bale lined trailers. Plus there were a couple of other travelers that got caught up in the parade.
An update on the local Telephone book project is for those who want display ads. Ad sizes range from $25 for a business card up to $200 for a color full page ad. Contact Wendy or Teresa -- who have both donated lots of time for this project -- for more information. Don’t delay as the deadline approaches soon! Note: This is for local listings only.
I received some great feedback from all in attendance on two event proposals. One is for a wine tasting event and another for a winter sports clinic. Check back for more information on these and other events!
An item of new business is to get a public calendar of events for the Community Center so that more can know when the Center will be occupied, as well as a means for others to check for upcoming events. Many suggested a Calendar that is on-site at the Community Center. This is a good idea.
After that we talked about the elections, to be held that evening for new Council members and officers. It was a simple and very memorable occasion. Per the requirements of the Articles of Incorporation of the Community Center Club, there needs to be 7 Council members or "Directors" of the Club, or it is obligated to dissolve. Many enthusiastically volunteered for specific positions and the requests were granted. There was no real competition for any position. Yours truly volunteered the 7th spot on the Council.
After all the required positions had been filled, outgoing Council members talked about the necessary paperwork that needed to be done, and keys to the building were transferred to the new Council members. A group of people who volunteered for a common purpose created a stirring moment of Democracy in the purest form.
Here are the new Council members:
Chairperson....Tiffany Wasilk, 2609
Vice Chair....Leah Tobin, 2223, leahtobin@hotmail.com
Secretary....Brennon Johnston, 2375, olyvialu11@yahoo.com
Treasurer....Linda Irvine, 2658, linda@thereunionbrat.com
Sergeant at Arms....Tom Mavin, 2628Members at large:
....Sam Adams, 2315
....Tracy Lebenzon, 2594, dmountains@explore-greenwater.com
Note: If anyone knows of email addresses for the folks not listed above, kindly let me know what they are and I’ll add them to the list above.
It was a first for me to be part of this process.
I hope that many coming Community events and Council meetings will be well attended. If folks would RSVP for the monthly Council meetings and agree to split the costs, we could easily add pizza and drinks to the meetings, and use the monthly meeting as an opportunity to socialize and plan events for our community!
So with the election, the Greenwater Community Center has new officers and new council members. I’d like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks, and also the thanks of our Community to Teresa Steel, Carol Miller, Evelyn Morris, Marian Parker, Jim McKinley and other long-time Council Members and Officers for their many services to our community. They are each a role model of those who give a lot back to the community and who are highly disserving of thanks from all in Greenwater! I hope they will all continue to participate in future Council meetings.
The next Council meeting will be held, January 14, 2007 at 7:30.
Hope to see you there!
