2010 Olympics countdown: 596 days until the Winter Olympics come to Vancouver, B.C.
Local athletes: Injury-plagued skier Libby Ludlow of Crystal Mountain has retired from the U.S. Ski Team after 10 years of racing, which included an appearance in the 2006 Olympics and winning the 2004 U.S. giant slalom championship.
In February, Ludlow told The News Tribune she hoped to compete in the 2010 Olympics even though she was hampered by injuries at the time.
“The fact that I am healthy right now and can walk away from the sport healthy, happy and satisfied with what I’ve accomplished is what I’ve always wanted. It feels really good,” Ludlow said in a statement for the U.S. Ski Team. “It was clear that now is my time to walk away. I feel really good about my career, and I am excited about what lies ahead.”
Ludlow had 45 top-30 finishes on the World Cup tour and three top-10 finishes. She finished ninth in the super G at the 2007 Alpine World Championships.
“Libby has been an incredible national team member over the past 10 years. Not only has she attained top level World Cup and World Championship performances during her career, she has been an inspiration to her teammates and to the ski racing community as a whole,” said alpine director Jesse Hunt.
Ludlow plans on taking the next year to complete her undergraduate degree at Dartmouth and travel abroad to be certified as a yoga instructor.
“I will always remember the U.S. Ski Team with fondness,” Ludlow said in the release. “My 10 years on the U.S. Ski Team helped mold me into the person I am today, and I am very grateful for the amazing experiences the team afforded me.”
U.S. team updates: Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke and his counterpart with the Nashville Predators, David Poile, will manage the U.S. hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Burke will be the general manager for the national team, and Poile will be the associate general manager.
• Moguls skier Shannon Bahrke has returned to training after missing the 2008 season with a knee injury.
• Olympic gold medalist skier Julia Mancuso climbed Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, earlier this month.
Facility updates: Olympic organizers started a series of public information meetings June 17 to inform citizens in venue cities about the daily operations of the games.
• West Vancouver was named as a venue city July 16. According to a statement from organizers, the city gets the status because the community will “engage residents of all ages … (and) support the values inspired by sport, recreation, arts and culture.” The city paid $1 million to be a venue city.
Other Olympic news: Bombardier Aerospace was hired June 17 to design the 2010 Olympic torch and cauldron.
• Tickets went on sale last month for the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane. The event will be Jan. 14-24, 2010, and will be the Olympic qualifier for U.S. skaters. For tickets, visit spokane2010.com or 1-800-325-7328.
• On May 30, the Olympic organizers issued a statement stating they filed a statement of defense with the British Columbia Supreme Court in response to complaints that they are not offering women ski jumping in the 2010 Olympics. The games will offer men’s ski jumping.
